The things and cares of this world have become more real inside of me in the last two days. I notice how easily the things of the world can overcome the inner life of the Spirit. It is like the ferocious attack of weeds in the tropics invading the garden that took so long to clean up!

As I offered my mind to the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit my prayer was, “Holy Spirit, give me back the wisdom of heaven, so that I may see the realities of this world through your eyes”. Then the Spirit begins to show me why He is called the counselor!

He shows me that His leading in my life is not simply to meet my needs and make me happy as I understand it or want it to be. His purpose is higher. He is leading me and preparing me to receive a reward and a life that is eternal. Therefore the safety and security that the Spirit can provide me is greater than my own defense systems. Though my defense system tries it’s best to protect me and meet my needs, it can’t prevent me from growing old or dying one day. It can’t defend me from things unseen and beyond my control. Yet it tries to defend me and prevent me from surrendering completely to God!

When the Holy Spirit makes me aware of my limitations and my foolishness, my internal defenses let go into the loving hands of God. The leading of the Holy Spirit is the best answer to my every need, desire and aspiration. Even if He has to lead me through worldly discomfort, rejection and pain, He will be my internal comforter and strength. Even death to self and ego outside will be transformed into life and energy at the level of the Spirit!

Then the Spirit leads me to Jesus. He invites me to look at Him as the one and only role model for my journey through life. St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians in chapter 2 speaks of the inner journey of the Lord. Though He was equal to God He let it go to become a human, then a servant and finally a slave obedient unto death itself. Yet the Lords trust of God the Father and the leading of the Holy Spirit was not in vain. St. Paul says that He was raised up above all things to the right hand of God. God will ultimately do infinitely better and more than our limited defense systems! This awareness given to me by the Holy Spirit leads me once again to total abandonment into the hands of God in complete trust with a heart full of peace, joy and love.

Blessed Are You Who Believed That What Was Spoken to You by the Lord Would Be Fulfilled

As I pray and reflect today the Holy Spirit and Jesus teaches me about true devotion to the Blessed Mother and her true value for me. She is a model of all what God can and wants to do in a human being.

We humans are created in the image of God. Therefore we have the basic freedom and independence that God himself has. Without this freedom and independence we are mere robots run in accordance with a pre set programme.

The wonder of this independence is that it is an independence and a separation from God which He himself will not or maybe even cannot bridge for the fear of violating our freedom! Therefore within us lies a universe that is on its own. All our internal functions, thought processes, fears, desires and joys are moved and controlled by cause and effect and the limited knowledge within us. They are heavily influenced by the information and experiences conveyed to us through our senses. Because of the gift of free will within us we determine what is real and true for us.

That is the reason why a small incident becomes a gripping reality within us and influences every area of our lives. Like the boy we met in Canada who hides in a basement of his home because of a rejection by a girl. Our inner being is a self-contained universe with its own realities that drive us and make many of our lives a terrible hell!

Is that one reason for God to become a man and come amongst us! To reveal another dimension of reality and invite us to open up our self contained universe to this great truth and blessing of God with us and in us! When we accept this truth and invitation a great transformation happens within us.

The blessed Mother is one who opened herself up completely to this great truth of God and had Him live inside of her! She teaches us how to carry God within ourselves and how to yield in a way that is fruitful both for her and for the world around. The feast of the ascension is the celebration of the ultimate reward for opening to the reality of God with and within her. She is taken bodily into the presence of God.

By her silent relationship with Jesus with no place or no prominence teaches us that the inner journey with God is the path of total fulfillment. That fullness in Jesus can be had in poverty, obscurity, lowliness and insignificance! That journey will be crowned with ascension into heaven one day and a deep intimacy with the Holy Spirit, Jesus and the Father.

The Gospel of today speaks the words of Elizabeth to Mary inspired by the Holy Spirit. Blessed are you among women. Why and how did the reality of God with her and within her enter her inner universe by the promise of the Angel? How do we know that this is true? Again under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit Elizabeth says “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled”! She accepted the word of God into her and treated it as true. This opened her to the blessings of God. This can be done in the lowliest and poorest circumstances of life, as Mary did thorough out her life! Again a ray of light and hope to everyone of us. We can be blessed when we permit God’s word to become the reality of our inner world!

Walking in the Light this New Year

Today we celebrate the dawn of a new year. As the light of morning shines upon the Nation it is important to take stock of the past year and look forward with hope towards the new one. Light and darkness are ancient themes used by the sages through the centuries to describe the good and the bad of life.

On a date as significant as the first day of the year it is imperative to shine a light on our lives and the events that are happening around us. If we cast our minds back to a time 50 years hence, we see a Nation and a people who knew how to identify good things and persons as light and bad things and evil persons as bad. A phase often used by people of that time was to ‘call a spade a spade’ or in today’s language deal directly with the truth.

Today we see great subterfuge being practiced by all and sundry, from the highest echelons to the lowest beggar on the street. People stirred, tormented and demented by greed, lust and the desire for riches and honour going to any lengths and falling to any level to achieve their aims.

The real danger of this situation is that this demented pursuit and greed is cleverly hidden in hyperbole as an angel of light! Many who practice these dark arts of lying, cheating, stealing , bribery and corruption also speak loudly of religion, values, right living, human rights and loving your neighbour.

We are sending a terrible message to our younger generation. We are telling them that living an immoral and sinful life is all right, as long as you can cover it up with a lot of balderdash spoken and shown to the rest of the world! Light has been overcome by darkness and darkness now masquerades as light!

What is the cost of continuing in this unbridled way? Not only will the next generation accept it as the normal way of life, it will have far greater consequences deep within the psyche of the people. When we break the natural principles of Right Living enshrined in every major religion, it brings disastrous consequences with it. As a person once said "we don't break the commandments but rather we break ourselves against them." Breakdown of Law and Order is the obvious consequence. But unseen within the hearts of people lurk discontentment, loss of self respect and absence of peace.

What is the answer? Let us begin the new year by heeding the call to return to the core values of the major religions of our nation such as the 'Panchasila' and the 'Ten Commandments' that helped to form civilization as we know it.

These proven and unchanging principles will not only restore society but also give us the authentic happiness and fulfillment deep within, which our hearts thirst for. When we truly experience that doing the right thing and doing it the right way and looking out for the welfare of others is a better way to happiness, peace and contentment, it will become a way of life and the model for our next generation. Let us make a new year resolution today to see light as light and darkness as darkness and to walk in the light of right living.

Christmas 2010

During this time, the whole world celebrates Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. Who is this man and what is His continued influence over a large population of our world? This is the same enigmatic question that was raised by Napoleon Bonaparte at his deathbed, exiled on an island off South America. He said “I raised an army, marched into Russia and dominated most of Europe, but I saw my empire crumble before my eyes, yet He raised no army and did not walk more than 80 kilometres from His home but continues to inspire millions to live and even die for Him, who is this man?”

Jesus Christ whose birth we celebrate today is considered the Son of God and God himself become man by all Christians. He is called the word that God spoke to the world to reveal his true nature and attitude towards humanity. Therefore his birth can be considered a message sent by God to the world.

Interestingly only Jesus Christ had the opportunity of choosing his own parents. By opting to be born to a poor family instead of to a most powerful and influential one, He reveals a secret of God’s heart. For God the purity and motive of the family to which he was born into was more important than their power and affluence. The Bible says that the one intention of His mother was to be obedient to the wishes and desires of God.

This stands in stark contrast to the general attitude popularised by a heavily commercialised Christmas. Many believe it is only uncontrolled spending and wild celebrations that can adequately express our joy at the birth of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

In fact Jesus was born to save us from sin. Sin can be defined as a lie that promises pleasure, security, happiness and a trouble free life, while it actually does the very opposite. It enslaves and makes its victims desperately unhappy.

Jesus the Son of the most powerful God exposes the lie of sin and casts a light on the path that everyone needs to follow to happiness. By consenting to be born a refugee, amongst animals in a manger, he reveals that he was born to bring God’s love and concern for the poorest of the poor. That he came to live for and die for others. In doing so he rose from the dead and continues to live forever.

Similarly he invites us to realise that we were born not just to live for ourselves and to seek our own happiness. He calls us to realise that when we too look beyond our own needs and desires towards those of others, we too join him in his mission on earth. Therefore let us reach out to those who have no voice or power in society, and to those who have no way of ever repaying us for our acts of love and kindness. When we do this we open ourselves to God’s great peace and love that would flood our hearts and minds. Who is this man then? He is truly the Prince of Peace. He invites us to His love however poor and sinful we are and invite us to care for the needs of others as our own path to peace and happiness.

Dare to enter the inner journey of our master

In Mark 2:17 Jesus says I have come to call the sinner. The leading of the Gospel is summed up in the verse from the book of Isaiah.

"and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry

and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,

then your light will rise in the darkness,

and your night will become like the noonday.

The LORD will guide you always;

he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land

and will strengthen your frame.

You will be like a well-watered garden,

like a spring whose waters never fail.

Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins

and will raise up the age-old foundations;

you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,

Restorer of Streets with Dwellings".

(Isaiah 58:10 -12)

But the question is how can we care about the poor when we are lost in the struggles and desires of our own needs? We have to meet the one who gave His life for us; The one who became poor to make us rich.

This encounter with Jesus Christ makes us loved and cared for enough to be inspired to abandon ourselves into His hands and His mission of loving, seeking and saving the lost.

Open the eyes of my heart Lord!

As I was praying this morning the Lord was teaching me of the darkness that surrounds us in the world we live in. We so easily fit into it and begin to think and feel like others do and even worse go back to our sinful past nature. How can we escape it? The Lord speaks to people as He came out of the desert at the beginning of the ministry and says, "repent, for the kingdom of God is near you".

That means heaven and the Kingdom of God is a parallel world that is right now amongst us! All we have to do is to repent of our sin, and offer the truth of what is happening in our hearts to the Lord in the second step. Suddenly, the inner eyes of the spirit are opened by the Spirit of God, and we see and feel the presence of Jesus in us and all around us! How do we know when this happens? The fruits of the flesh as mentioned in Galatians 5 such as anger, lust, resentment, revenge, fear and insecurity is replaced by the fruits of the Spirit as mentioned in Galatians 5:22, the peace, love and joy of God moves in us, and are hearts sing and dance to the now visible tunes of joy come from the kingdom of God!

May this become real in your life too.

Private time with the Lord

During my recent visit to the Divine Retreat Centre in India I had a rare opportunity to spend a lot of time in prayer. One thing I discovered about myself is that when I don't have enough private time with the Lord I tend to build up a defense even against God! I feel the need to take care of myself and carry my own life on my own shoulders. This drains my energy and stresses me out. Even when I read the promises of God that I have so often preached to others, they seem so unreal to me. I tell myself of God's personal love for me but it does not ease the worry of taking responsibility for myself.

The one way to change this situation is to take time to soak in the word and presence of God. Though nothing seems to happen at first, the depths of our unconscious dryness and unbelief is touched and suddenly the miracle of presence and the fruits of the spirit such as peace love and joy are restored. Let us all find a time to be personally and internally renewed in the spirit.

As we begin a new year...

After a long layoff I thought of writing something for all who have been following my blog in the recent past. God promises to give us everything we need for life and godliness. But He goes even further to say that our needs will be met not by our own efforts but by His Divine Power. It is a statement that is worth pondering upon. Can this really be true? How can God provide ALL we need by His power?

The second part of verse 3 opens us to a great answer not understood by many people. St. Peter says that the Divine power that is necessary to meet all our needs comes from the knowledge of Him who called us. Him who called us is our Lord Jesus Christ Himself!

First of all Jesus is risen from the dead and is alive. Second we can have, and grow in a relationship with the Living Christ in such a way that the divine life necessary for life and godliness will flow into us. How does this happen in practical terms?

I remember as a small child the impact that adults and other senior boys had on our lives. We saw them as larger than life and studied every move they made in reverent awe! We began to dress like them, walk like them and even talk like them. Seeing them and associating with them changed the way we live, sometimes even to be bad. But there is no question of the impact they had on us.

Even in the spiritual life we look at other people for inspiration. We are encouraged by great preaching and miracle working. We are also encouraged by great acts of sacrifice for the sake of our Lord and the Kingdom. We try to become like them and our inspired to inner responses by them. Yet often as we walk in the journey of the Kingdom with others, their limitations and their humanness begins to have an effect on us. We tend to measure the ceiling and limits of God by what is happening in their lives and what they believe. Their limitations become our excuse to slacken our own commitment to God. Quietly we become just like the ones we gaze upon! When we realize that it has affected our own journey we judge them for it and they become now not an inspiration but a hindrance to our journey with God!

But Peter invites us to go beyond others in the reading given to us this year. He invites us to fix our gaze on Jesus first and foremost. But how do we fix our eyes on Him. In verse 4 Peter reveals the way. Focus upon the great promises given by the Lord to us. As we gaze upon, claim and hold on to the great promises of Jesus, in our prayer and worship, the Holy Spirit makes them alive and real in our heart. It is then that we will go beyond our own limitation and the limitations of others. As one author put it so beautifully, it is like “marching to the tune of a different drum”. Yes we are all in the same parade through History, but the drum we march to, is the drum beat of the heart of Jesus, made audible to us through His promises while so many others march to the beat of the world around them.

Isaiah captures it beautifully in His heart cry;

Isaiah 60:1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come,

and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

Isaiah 60:2 See, darkness covers the earth

and thick darkness is over the peoples,

but the LORD rises upon you

and his glory appears over you.

Isaiah says that as darkness covers the earth and the people, the Lord will rise upon them who belong to Him. Those who belong to Him are those who have a relationship by living by the light of the promises of Jesus and gazing upon Him in worship. As the light shines into our hearts and radiates within us it will reflect God’s glory which will attract others who walk in darkness. That gives meaning to the beautiful insight of Isaiah when he says

Isaiah 60:3 Nations will come to your light,

and kings to the brightness of your dawn

This is truly our call in the year 2010. This is my prayer for each one of you as well.

“Lord lead us beyond our selves and beyond others to yourself alone. Give us the grace to gaze upon you and hear your voice in and through your promises brought alive in our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of us. Lord empower us to inner responses in spite of our own weaknesses and limitations. Lord let not the darkness in others dim the light in my life, but rather let the light of your life in me be light to the world”.

Sitting at the Feet of the Lord

From my smallest days Christianity had seemed a great responsibility to be good and faithful to God. This call was greatly opposed by the inner nature that wanted to do the exact opposite of what was expected of me. I was pushed and pulled by inner desires and drives to be self indulgent and seek pleasure and happiness in the ways of the world. The burden of guilt that built up within me over the years led me avoid God, avoid prayer and avoid church.

My desire to be free of this guilt pushed me to the rational, scientific approach to reality that first of all explained and justified all that was happening within me as natural and acceptable. Secondly it gave me a chance to be self indulgent without having to carry any guilt within myself. Thirdly it made me feel superior to all those people who lived in the ignorant dark ages of superstitious beliefs.

But in quiet moments when I had to deal with my own inner being, I knew that something was desperately wrong and I was insecure and unhappy. It was reflected in my addictions to alcohol, cigarettes and other indulgences as a means to happiness. I probably would have gone on like this till the end of my life, with addictions and interest changing according to the various psychological shifts of age. That is until the Lord decided to show His face to me.

When I realized that Jesus and Christianity were not merely dealing with a philosopher and a philosophy, but that He was actually risen from the dead and alive everything changed. As I looked at Jesus through the portraits of the gospels brought alive to me by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, learnt how He thought, experienced how He felt towards the weak, the sinful and the lost, I was overwhelmed and lost my heart to Him.

This can be best explained by a word picture drawn for us by John.

Jn 11:2 This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair,

As we realize the Lord’s heart for the weak and sinful it becomes easy to sit at His feet and enter into a deep relationship with Him. In this intimacy, we are loved and made secure within. It is then that we become safe enough to let go our compulsive and learnt habits and behaviors over a lifetime. It is then that we start the adventure of venturing into the unknown and untested ways of the Lord in dealing with the events and circumstances of life. If we argued our case and fought for our ways of doing things, we become safe enough in the knowledge that the Lord rules to remain silent, to forgive, to learn to listen and even discover higher ways of resolving issues. This becomes transformational not only for me but even for everyone else involved.

These few lines from ‘Take me Higher’ explains it beautifully

Hold me as I rise, rise beyond by being
As I feel your presence surround me
Lord I come to worship on my knees

Brokenness

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EPg8-a81UNo/Ssr4HcVlauI/AAAAAAAABOY/TMejncbh_94/s320/Jesusname.gif" />

Both yesterday and today my attention is drawn by the word in Acts 19 to the power in the name of Jesus. A team of brothers see St. Paul using the name of Jesus to cast out demons and maybe even heal the sick. They become very interested in this method and decide to try it out themselves on someone who is possessed by an evil spirit. They shout at that person, ‘in the name of Jesus Christ whom Paul preaches’. The evil spirit declares “Jesus I know, Paul I know, but who are you” and pounces on them and chases them out sans their clothes!

Why could Paul use the name of Christ to great effect whilst the brothers had no effect from that name? It is a question I can easily ask myself as I look back on my own life. There were many years when I preached almost the same words I am preaching now with little or no effect. The sermons were appreciated and the jokes laughed at. But a true conversion of heart was extremely rare and even then very short lived.

As I reflect this morning I realise the things that God has done in my life. Earlier though I loved the Lord and knew the scripture, my reliance was on my own self and my ministry was first and foremost a means of self expression and a fulfilment of my need to be appreciated.

Great crisis and great problems swept over my life almost a decade ago. It broke the confidence I had in my own self and ruined my good name amongst men. Desperate, hurting and lost I fell at the feet of Jesus and experienced deeply His forgiveness, mercy and restoring love. Loved by the Lord, held in His loving arms, I deeply experienced great security, enough to surrender to Him fully knowing that relying on my own self is of no use. The word used for this in the Bible is brokenness.

This new relationship with my Jesus and the new anointing infused supernatural power to everything within me and around me. It poured out from within me into the lives of those around me. I had found the fountain of living water. No, no Jesus led me to it kicking, screaming and protesting!

A three wheel driver who testified yesterday at the Kandy meeting explains it very beautifully. He is not Christian but saw the crowds in the Church and was drawn by curiosity. He listens from outside, gradually moves inside over the weeks, experiences a healing from the Lord, is touched by the Love of Jesus which has become real for him and now wants to give his life to the Lord!

Everything belongs to my God

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EPg8-a81UNo/Ssigh9duHfI/AAAAAAAABNg/RbEiAsty3Gk/s400/DSC03800.JPG" />

Today I am led to reflect on my inner responses as circumstances and events around me become dark and negative. I hear negative feedback and criticisms as third party information. Immediately my heart moves to judge the people who have supposed to have said these things. Then my inner being jumps towards explaining and justifying my own position to myself and to God. Further, my spirit is lifted up to God in complaining with “you know God what the truth is” prayers. Suddenly feelings of anger break through followed by self pity and despondency. It has become a real roller coaster ride of changing and oscillating emotions. Now I am old enough in the Lord to know that this is a moment where I am called to deeper prayer and more time in the presence of the Lord. So I sit quietly before the Lord and say ‘Lord I come as I am, I know you love me’.

How easily the storms of circumstances obliterate the vision of God! People and events have become so big that they have become huge mountains standing in my way, so much so that I begin to feel that even God is powerless and helpless to do anything about them! The storm has become God. I give this truth to the Lord at His feet and admit my sinful and weak approach to crisis.

As I surrender myself into His hands and invite the Holy Spirit to take over my life and fill me with His power, thoughts from God begin to flood my mind. I am reminded of Jesus before Pilate, and how the Lord was told by Pilate that he has power over him. It certainly looked like that! It was so at one level. But Jesus refuses to agree to His dimension and world view. He says ‘you have no power over me, unless it has been given to you from above’. Jesus was saying that God ruled His life and the circumstances around it, however differently it may be seen, because He was totally surrendered to the will of His Father. This approach of faith was vindicated by the Resurrection and His rule over the whole universe as the ‘First born from the dead’ and ‘head of the Church’. His continued impact upon humanity 2000 years later is the greatest proof that God was truly in control when everything was out of control!

As I accept this truth into my heart, my inner being comes to peace. God rules my life and the circumstances around it. He will take everything and turn it into a blessing. He will fix my sinfulness and flesh with trials and suffering He will permit. He will find a way to greater and greater blessing. As I read today from the words of St. Paul, the Lord reminds me how the greatest enemy of the early Church becomes its greatest hope, because of the intervention of Jesus.

Everything belongs to my God and He would find a way through everything to lead me to the fullness of His plan. Thank you Jesus.

What is true humility?

<img $r="true" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EPg8-a81UNo/SsXqXo78GuI/AAAAAAAABNQ/xm0LP-uLcwE/s400/humility.png" />

Today was a busy day when needs of the family intruded into my prayer time. Judging by the responses of people, it was really an idea inspired by the Lord to share a little about the daily journey with God.

A question that has always intrigued me from time to time is the definition of humility. In the past I had mistaken low self esteem to be the model of humility. Denying oneself and being negative about one self was often applauded as great humility because it made other people feel good about themselves, powerful and superior. The best way is to look at the Lord and His life.

St. Paul speaks of how Jesus became empty of His divinity to humble Himself even unto death. This seems to prove the above mind set. Yet if we look at the “I am” statements of Jesus it looks the exact opposite of it. He says I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me. The Father and I are one, or when you see me, you see the Father!

In this context I have come to realise that being humble is to be truthful! Be real, don’t pretend and play games for an image boost in the eyes of others. If my value, worth and love comes from God my Father and Jesus my Lord, what other people think of me really is not that important. Why do I want other people to think highly of me? Those days I thought that I must do it so that they can come to the Lord, looking at my goodness. But if my goodness is not real, it would only be a short term attraction that ultimately ends up with disappointment and pain.

Yet if they see how I desperately seek the Lord, and how real His love, mercy and forgiveness is to me, they would learn to look beyond me and even join me in seeing together the Lord Jesus who is the only one who can truly set us free.

Lord your love is enough for me

As I prayed this morning, my heart was attracted to the first step of the 4 steps; “Come as you are I love you”. Because when I reflect on who I am, I can easily identify with the paralytic who was lowered before Jesus by four men. Paralysed by the history of my past, I am unable to do anything about who I have become! Wrong love, bad experiences, long periods of sinfulness have made be a distorted person inside. Even my desires are for the wrong things of life. Things other than the love of Jesus attract my innermost depths.

It is in this situation that I hear the voice of the Lord say, “Come as you are I love you”! I am called by the Lord to faith. Faith in His word and through it faith in His love. John 3:16 says “God so loved the world, that He sent His only Son, not to condemn it but to save it”. The love of Jesus is what I really need. It is enough for me. No, more than enough for me, for He says in John 10:10; “I have come to give life, and give it abundantly”. A love that would fill me and over flow from me is available to me from the heart of Jesus, even though my addictions and sinful past cries out for something else.

A journey of faith for me is to quietly and firmly accept this revelation from my Jesus into my heart this morning. “Lord your love is enough for me, no, more than enough for me, it is going to fill me, meet my innermost needs and overflow from me into the lives of others around me”

“And hope will not disappoint us as the love of God is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit” Romans 5:5
